The Immunology Examination:

I have been giving "open book" examinations for the past several years. They have always been multiple choice exams and this year will not be any different. They other "modules" in this course will probably not use "open book exams". I have a philosophy that exams should not be strict memorization, but rather test you on your ability to use concepts and use "resources" such as textbooks, notes, scientific journals, electronic databases and colleagues for the details. This is the way it is in the "real" world (whatever that is). Do not be mislead, you will still have to study before the exam. One hour is not enough time to both study your notes and take the exam. I have provided copies of old exams for your inspection and for use as study guides. The older exams are pre open-book, but they look exactly like the open-book exams. Interesting, isn't it? I have never tested your ability to memorize. I am focused on concepts.

During the exam you may use your notes, textbooks, old exams and computers (with the exception of e-mail). A word to the wise… Sucessful students own a medical dictionary. At least half of the questions that I get during the exam are about unfamiliar terms. You have been warned! Bring a medical dictionary to the exam and make it part of your professional library.
