Introduction to Seismology
This note presents a basic study in
seismology and the utilization of seismic waves for the study of Earth's
interior. It introduces techniques necessary for understanding of elastic wave
propagation in layered media. Topics covered includes: Stress and strain,
Relationship between stress and strain, Equation of motion, Wave equation,
d'Alembert's solution, Separation of variables, Fourier transform, Slowness,
Travel time curves, Travel time tomography, Snell's law, Critical and
post-critical reflection, Surface waves-ground roll, Normal modes, Anisotropy,
Earthquake, Focal mechanics.
